Jan Klue was born on the 29th of August 1980. He is the 4th generation winemaker on the farm Wolvendrift. His family comes from a rich tradition of growing grapes and making wine and passing the knowledge on from father to son.
It was no surprise after attending Paarl Boys High, that Jan decided to go and further his studies in becoming a winemaker. He went to Elsenburg Agricultural College and his main subjects were vineyard production, oenology and pomology. After learning the science behind winemaking, he joined his father on the farm in 2003. With his father's experience and Jan's newly found knowledge they became a good team.
This same year, Jan went to California to broaden his horizons and to learn new techniques.
He worked in a small red wine cellar in the Sanoma Valley, outside Healdsburg. This cellar is known for producing Zinfandel and Syrah, that they age in French Oak barrels.
Jan flew solo for the first time in 2004, making the Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot (Red Wolf) all by himself, with his father concentrating on the white varietals.
In 2006 Jan took all the winemaking responsibilities on himself and wants to take Wolvendrift to new heights. Jan wants to expand the Wolvendrift range, with a sparkling wine, a Shiraz and a Rose in the near future!
"I am a firm believer that wine is made in the vineyard and not in the cellar.
Wine should not be rushed in the cellar. Taking your time is of utmost importance.
With our unique soil and climate, we can produce all most anything here."
