Great Grandfather Michael Klue

Great Grandfather Michael Klue left Oudtshoorn in 1903 and bought the farm Wolvendrift in the Robertson Valley, on the Bonnievale road. Originating from Oudtshoorn in the arid Karoo he farmed with ostriches, cattle and Muscadel.

An upcoming market, favourable climatic conditions and the availability of water ensured that viticulture became his top priority. With exceptional insight, Michael's son Josef, enlarged his father's existing cellar.

Wine was produced in bulk and sold to wholesalers. Josef was also a keen racehorse breeder, but when his son Michael took over in 1980, the horses were sold and the land was utilised for vineyards.

Michael's knowledge and passion for viniculture makes him an excellent winemaker. His dedication en enthusiasm is shared by his son Jan, who in 2003 joined him on the farm at completion of his studies.

This combination will surely mean that our unique wines will be enjoyed for many years to come.
The name of the farm is connected to an interesting tale, and today nobody knows whether it is truth or fiction.

“Aardwolf”

It is assumed that this area was the habitat of the “aardwolf”. It apparently resembled a hyena and was confused with the European wolf, hence the name.

On the Van der Westhuizen's farm across the river, there is still a stone henge ruine, that they used to catch these wolves with.

Policy Of High Quality

Jan firmly believes that winemaking starts in the vineyard, thus handling the vineyards with the utmost care to ensure low yields, this ensures greater quality in the wines during the winemaking process.

Harvesting at night ensures the grapes reach the cellar at the coolest temperature possible.
The total winemaking process is slowed down to ensure minimum wine-stress, capturing the outstanding natural nose and palate qualities.

Wolvendrift will stick to its policy of high quality wines not only for the South African market, but the international market as well.

Wolvendrift… Where quality prevails!
